159th Attack Helicopter Wing
"I can hover, Ive taught others to hover, some were even fighter pilots!" AHW Training Officer
"So after many years of dashed hopes and unanswered prayers, it has arrived, the 'Bird' has been released from its cage! And what a beautiful bird she is! A dragon scaled, fire breathing, flying beast of destruction, who knows no master other than he who strokes her back gently and whispers softly in her ear!
OMG!! Has ever sitting in your virtual pit been more challenging, exciting and frustrating...... She is a tormentor of the meek, a seductress of the mild and a dominatrix of the bold. She is quite simply a black shark of the skies. She is Death. She is magnificent! ENJOY!" Anon
The 159th Attack Helicopter Wing has firmly established itself as an important part of the 159th's strike capability. Operating along side the well established and successful Fighter and Strike Wings, we give our Regiment a truly Multi Role capability. That said, we still operate at times autonomously with no support from the other wings and vice-versa, relying strictly on our own skills and tactics to keep us alive for the duration of the battle.
We currently operate with five flights – four combat and one reserve. On our twice weekly squad nights we focus on combat support with a secondary aim of training in order to have all AHW pilots advance through the AHW Grading Wings plan. That said, some times we have nothing but training, sometimes nothing but a giant furball of rotors and bullets free-for-all battle. At the end, we aim to educate each other, support the other flights and have a good time doing it all.
The Ka50 is by far the most complex and unforgiving of the AC we fly and requires a greater degree of focus and skill to get it to perform authentically. So as we expand our knowledge of the Ka50 we are in parallel developing and formalising operating procedures that optimise our performance both as individuals and as part of a working combat Flight or Wing. Training is the key to survival in the Black Shark and here at the 159th AHW you will find plenty of it!
Our combat operations range across the spectrum of helicopter Ops. We do CAS, Recce, DEAD (destruction of enemy air defence) and have recently adopted AFAC duties for both FW and SW. We are usually the front runners when dealing with air defence threats, clearing the way for the fast air boys so they only have to deal with other airborne threats during their mission. We usually deploy from FARPs but Sochi Adler always has a section set aside for us if needed.

We have come along way from our initial deployment with the 159th GAR – slapping rotors, ground vortexes and missed targets to pin-point precision attacks, all altitude flight (we try and stay low and slow) and close formation in all weather. Our SOPs are a great start for new pilots to get a grasp on the capabilities of the Black Shark, and all pilots are encouraged to forward training ideas and lessons at all times.
